Keep it simple stupid

One of the most pressing and frustrating issues facing America at all levels is the OVER-LEGISLATION of the country. With each passing year, the Senate and Congress push to pass unenforceable laws to make it appear that they are "doing something". What we really need is to streamline the system and remove duplicate and contradictory laws. A move to common sense and simplification will ease the burden on law enforcement and help to eliminate the backlog of cases clogging the courts at all levels.

Empowering Judges to quash frivolous lawsuits before they can even tie up a courtroom. For example: The now infamous McDonald's Coffee trial. A woman orders a cup of coffee, puts it between her legs while driving, and subsequently spills it on herself. She sues for damages because the coffee was hot and burned her. This suit ended in a judgment against McDonald's, but was settled out of court for 10% of the "damages" she was seeking. She ultimately received $300,000 dollars, but this case wasted one week of valuable courtroom time, and became one more settlement causing corporate insurance coverage premiums to rise to ridiculous amounts. This also created another waste of taxpayer money... the beverage "police". Now there are people paid to randomly test the temperature of beverages at restaurants, fast food providers, gas stations, coffee shops and so on to ensure they are not too hot or too cold.

These cases disrupt the regular work of the courts, which is to punish criminals.

Tort reform is one of the most hotly contested areas of law. Trial attorneys vigorously oppose setting limits on suits. Ridiculous judgments are handed down by juries regularly. Some of you may have seen this first hand. Maybe a neighbor tripped on your front steps and now they want $5 million for pain and suffering. Maybe a friend was involved in an auto accident and has had a civil suit brought against him for an unrealistic amount? Or a resident of your apartment building is suing for "damages" caused by you smoking inside your home?

The answer to these problems is a simple two part solution.

1. Streamline the judicial system. Remove duplicate laws, unenforceable laws, contradictory laws.

2. Take personal responsibility for what you do.
